The story in a Broadway Musical is told in important numbers from the show. We will reveal the musical’s intent by exploring those vital numbers which “tell the story and progress the plot.” Using extensive song and dance video excerpts, we will transport you to Broadway for some of the greatest classic and modern shows which will make you tap your toes, wipe your tears, and remember why Broadway Musicals are the greatest entertainment in the world. This course is an updated version of the course introduced at Stetson in Fall 2014 and reprised in Spring 2017.

Join us as we explore the intriguing country of Brazil, using music to illustrate key historic and cultural points. We’ll fast forward from the 1940s (when Disney created an international sensation with the song “Brazil”), to Carmen Miranda (who brought samba to The States in a fruit salad hat), through the Sixties’ bossa nova craze (which forever changed jazz around the globe), landing in today (where we can appreciate Brazil’s significant contemporary artists). In this entertaining class, we’ll investigate the soccer/samba/carnival stereotypes and appreciate how Brazil is markedly different from the Spanish-speaking world. Come and enjoy Brazil’s truly greatest hits – its ebullient friendliness, distinct and diverse heritages, iconic characters, largely unknown achievements, and unparalleled natural treasures. And also learn some Brazilian Portuguese along the way!
